"Epoxy" Has Become a Catch-All Term
Most homeowners search for "epoxy garage floor," and that's fine โ it's the term everyone knows. But what most professional installers, including us, actually apply is a polyaspartic/polyurea hybrid system, not standard epoxy. The two are related but perform very differently, and understanding the difference will save you from a floor that looks great for a year and then goes downhill.
UV Stability
Standard epoxy is not UV stable. Any epoxy floor exposed to sunlight โ which is most garages, especially near a window or open door โ will start to yellow and amber over time. Polyaspartic is fully UV stable; color stays true for 15+ years instead of fading within a couple of seasons.
Cure Time
This is one of the biggest practical differences. Standard epoxy takes 3โ7 days to cure before it's ready for vehicle traffic โ your garage is essentially unusable that whole time. Polyaspartic cures fast: foot traffic within hours, vehicle traffic within 24 hours. Most of our installs are complete, start to finish, in a single day.
Temperature Flexibility
Concrete expands and contracts with temperature โ something the Twin Lakes Area sees plenty of between summer heat and winter freeze-thaw cycles. Standard epoxy is rigid and prone to cracking as the slab moves beneath it. Polyaspartic has more flexibility, moving with the concrete instead of fighting it.
Strength and Chemical Resistance
- Abrasion resistance: Polyaspartic systems are up to 6ร stronger than standard epoxy โ critical for hot tire pickup, which is when a hot tire literally pulls a soft coating up off the floor.
- Chemical resistance: Oil, gas, brake fluid, and household chemicals resist polyaspartic topcoats far better than standard epoxy, which can stain or soften with prolonged exposure.
Cost Difference
Polyaspartic systems typically cost somewhat more per square foot than a basic epoxy kit or budget install โ but given the difference in lifespan (15+ years versus a few years before visible wear), the cost per year of service is usually lower with polyaspartic, not higher.
